ABOUT
The African Population and Health Research Center (APHRC) is a leading Africa-based, African-led, international research institution headquartered in Nairobi, Kenya. APHRC conducts policy-relevant research on population, health, education, urbanization and related development issues in sub-Saharan Africa. The APHRC seeks to recruit two Post-Doctoral Research Scientists.
RESPONSIBILITIES
1. Contribute to the development of information systems and provision of analytical methodological support and advices to researchers;
2. Lead and contribute to proposal development and fundraising for research projects in the unit;
3. Provide statistical advice and support to researchers developing proposals and writing scientific papers;
4. Supervise and mentor junior staff to contribute to the design of proposals for grant applications, scientific writing analytical support and/or information systems development;
5. Supervise and mentor junior staff to conduct literature reviews;
6. Ensure the recruitment, training and supervision of field interviewers;
7. Oversee/lead development of field and training manuals;
8. Ensure ethical approvals and research permits are obtained;
9. Oversee fieldwork in the execution of the research projects to ensure timely implementation of field activities;
10. Ensure community mobilization and education of the community in relation to the research;
11. Contribute to the development of project reports;
12. Contributeto institutional publications including and not limited to lay dissemination materials such as policy/research briefs and fact sheets;
13. Contribute to policy engagement and the unit’s strategic planning;
14. Contribute to cultivation of relations with key institutional donors;
15. Represthe Center at high level national, regional and international forums, including relevant technical working groups and expert committees; and
16. Define own area of research interest through developing proposals, concept notes and publishing in the area.

| REQUIREMENTS FOR THIS JOB |
QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE
1. PhD in Demography, Populations Studies, Public Health, Sociology, Statistics, Data Science, Econometrics, or equivalent in related disciplines.
2. Have 2 years’ of relevant post-doctoral experience.
3. Strong writing skills and good record of publications, which utilize defined analytical methodologies.
4. Experience in developing proposals; evidence of previous successful grants will be an advantage.
5. Demonstrated experience in managing research projects, including experience in conducting, coordinating and managing surveys.
6. Proven experience in conducting desk reviews.
7. Strong quantitative skills (managing, analyzing and interpreting data), with good familiarity with quantitative statistical packages (e.g. STATA, R).
8. Expertise in political economy research or qualitative methods, including familiarity with qualitative analysis software packages (e.g. NVivo) will be an advantage.
9. Excellent interpersonal and organizational skills and ability to work in a culturally diverse team.
10. Experience working in Francophone West Africa.
11. Fluent communication and writing in French is necessary for the position in West Africa.
One Postdoctoral Research Scientist will be based at the West Africa Regional Office in Senegal while the other will be based at the Nairobi HQ Office.
