ABOUT
The African Population and Health Research Center (APHRC) is an African-led and Africa-based international research institute committed to conducting high quality and policy-relevant multidisciplinary research. Our researchers address critical development issues and challenges facing sub- Saharan Africa (SSA) in areas such as education, population, health, aging, urbanization, and wellbeing. Our goal is to generate evidence for meaningful action, engage with policymakers in the region to disseminate our research findings, influence policy decisions, and improve the quality of life in Africa.

PURPOSE OF ROLE
1. APHRC is looking for a Consultant Researcher with expertise on the care economy in the West Africa region to join a dynamic team and help bring lasting evidence-based change in Africa.
2. The incumbent will report to the Head of APHRC West Africa Regional Office in Dakar, Senegal.

ABOUT THE HEWLETT CARE ECONOMY PROJECT
The project seeks to generate and foster the use of evidence and gender-aware macroeconomic tools that contribute to increased public investment in care provisioning and infrastructures for young children and older adults. The African Population and Health Research Center and a team of global and regional partners are assessing the economic and social impacts of existing care arrangements in Kenya and Senegal with the aim of developing innovative tools to inform national economic policies and budgets. The team will support regional partners in using new evidence to influence governments’ post-COVID-19 policies to address the demand for unpaid care work and support women’s economic agency.

RESPONSIBILITIES
The successful candidate will make intellectual contribution and drive the research and policy engagement efforts in collaboration with the team working on the Care Economy Project.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
1. Lead and contribute in the implementation of the Care Economy Project in the West Africa region;
2. Participate in the design of empirical research and scientific writing;
3. Contribute to policy engagement and dissemination of research findings;
REQUIREMENTS FOR THIS JOB
QUALIFICATIONS AND COMPETENCIES
1. PhD in Social Sciences with over 5 years of post-graduate (Masters or above) work experience;
2. Experience and strong interest in the areas of gender and women’s economic empowerment;
3. Good record of publications on relevant areas in sub-Saharan Africa;
4. Strong qualitative skills (managing, analyzing and interpreting data), with extensive familiarity with quantitative methods;
5. Proficiency in spoken and written English and French.

DESIRABLE
1. Ability to work independently, take initiative and work collegially with a diverse team;
2. Excellent networking, interpersonal, analytical, and organizational skills coupled with resourcefulness, initiative;
3. Experience in engaging in multi-country stakeholders with a view to engender evidence in decision-making at country and regional level;
4. Understanding of the care economy especially as relates to children, those with disability and older persons.
