ABOUT
The African Population and Health Research Center (APHRC) is a leading Africa-based, African-led, international research institution headquartered in Nairobi, Kenya. APHRC conducts policy-relevant research on population, health, education, urbanization and related development issues in sub-Saharan Africa.
PURPOSE OF ROLE
APHRC seeks to recruit Short-Term Consultant Data Professionals and Interns to support data driven projects at the Center. Successful candidates will be engaged on assignments for periods not exceeding six (6) months.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
1. Participate in the development, review and translation of research tools;
2. Participate in the pre-testing of data collection platforms / databases;
3. Data cleaning including doing all required consistency checks for project data;
4. Document project data sets according to the Center’s guidelines on data documentation, archiving and sharing;
5. Extract data and prepare analytical files;
6. Support harmonization and standardization of data sets including development of Extraction, Transformation and Loading (ETLs);
7. Perform basic and advanced statistical analysis of data;
8. Participate in scientific writing;
9. Write technical reports on data issues; and
10. Participate in development of standard operating procedures for data use at the Center.

QUALIFICATIONS, SKILLS, AND EXPERIENCE
1. A bachelor’s, Master’s or PhD degree in statistics, biostatistics, data science, data systems development, machine learning, AI, health informatics, mathematical modeling or equivalent.
2. Interns should be recently graduated or at advanced stages in their study programs (BSc, MSc) with minimal work experience.
3. Consultants should have demonstrable and extensive experience in their preferred data areas of interest.
4. High level quantitative skills (managing, analyzing and interpreting data).
5. Knowledge of programming, analytical and visualization tools such as STATA, R, Tableau, Python, PowerBi, etc. is essential.
6. Knowledge of geographical information system tools such as QGIS, ArcGIs, GeoCLIM, etc. is desirable.
7. Working knowledge in data management platforms such as Open Data Kit (ODK), REDCap, SurveyCTO, Nesstar, KoboCollect, etc is desirable.
