MAIN PURPOSE OF POSITION
Agronomist will conduct and support field agronomic research program and scale up conservation agriculture in cereal and grain legume production systems.

MAIN RESPONSIBILITIES
1. Develop, monitor, and evaluate research trials on cereals and food legumes as well as other potential rotation crops.
2. Evaluate rhizobia species in food legumes and identify superior strains for use in production of inoculants and agronomic practices for higher nitrogen fixation.
3. Identify, verify, and implement modern agronomy methodologies and approaches for cereal and grain legume production that could be adaptable to smallholder farmers.
4. Develop strategies for weed control, including parasitic weeds, and integrated nutrient management for profitable crop production while conserving natural resource base and protecting the environment.
5. Conduct research on dryland agronomy to increase and sustain crop yields and systems productivity, with special emphasis on conservation agriculture, crop diversification, and integrated crop management practices.
6. Participate in training activities in cooperation with other programs in ICARDA, NARS partners, and advance research institutions.
7. Publish in ISI journals with focus on conservation agriculture and intensification of cereal-legume production systems.
8. Develop concept notes and research proposals for possible funding
9. Represent ICARDA in regional and international fora.
10. Perform any other duties as required by supervisor.

REQUIREMENTS FOR THIS JOB
EDUCATION, QUALIFICATIONS, AND EXPERIENCE
1. PhD in agronomy, soils, crops, or related field from reputed agricultural university.
2. At least 5 years’ work experience on agronomy and related research in National or International agricultural centres
3. Demonstrated experience in cropping systems research especially in conservation agriculture based agronomic practices and precision agriculture.
4. Capacity to plan, design and implement field scale research and demonstration program
5. Computer skills, with an understanding of statistical design and analysis of field research trials
6. Experience with crop simulation modelling and advanced statistical analysis
7. Experience with farm machinery, soil fertility, weed management
8. Excellent communication skills in spoken and written English and Hindi
9. Ability to work in a multidisciplinary and multicultural work environment

Terms of appointment, salary, and benefits
This is a nationally recruited position available for Indian nationals for which ICARDA offers an attractive compensation package including a competitive salary, medical insurance, 30 days of annual leave, five months’ maternity leave, 15 days’ paternity leave. The successful candidate will be offered an initial contract of 3 years. The contract will be renewable subject to continued need for the position, the availability of funds and satisfactory performance.
