MAIN PURPOSE OF POSITION
To conduct basic, applied, and strategic research to discover, deploy and develop improved germplasm of barley
MAIN RESPONSIBILITIES
1. Plan and execute basic, strategic, and applied research on barley for food, feed and malt in consultation with cereal team
2. Develop and deploy breeding material as per the defined breeding product profiles of barley in the target populations of environment in India
3. Upscaling of barley technologies under various projects/initiatives, and linking farmers with research products and developmental activities
4. Maintenance breeding and quality seed production of barley varieties
5. Data recording and management, statistical analysis and interpretation of results generated from various experiments
6. Management of breeding and evaluation pipelines of barley in BMS or any other system adopted by ICARDA
7. Prepare manuscripts for publication in reputed journals, technical reports of various projects, technical bulletins, and training materials
8. Develop research proposals for resource generation
9. Represent ICARDA in regional and international fora.
10. Perform any other duties as required by supervisor.

| REQUIREMENTS FOR THIS JOB |
EDUCATION, QUALIFICATIONS, AND EXPERIENCE
1. PhD in plant breeding, plant genetics or related scientific fields from a reputed agricultural university
2. At least 5 years’ experience in breeding crops preferably barley.
3. Proven record of quality research publications in international journals
4. Well trained in new tools and technologies in breeding crops particularly prebreeding, marker assisted selection and genomics
5. Experience in data management, field experimentation, statistical analysis and result interpretation
6. Experience in providing training to young scientists in the field of plant breeding, seed production and on-farm demonstration
7. Proven record of managerial, team-building, and supervisory skills in field experiments and on-farm demonstrations.
8. Well verged in computer programs and in-depth knowledge of statistical packages including GENSTAT and R
9. Excellent communication skills in spoken and written English and Hindi
10. Ability to work in a multidisciplinary and multicultural work environment

Terms of appointment, salary, and benefits
This is a nationally recruited position available for Indian nationals for which ICARDA offers an attractive compensation package including a competitive salary, medical insurance, 30 days of annual leave, five months’ maternity leave, and 15 days’ paternity leave. The successful candidate will be offered an initial contract of 3 years. The contract will be renewable subject to continued need for the position, the availability of funds, and satisfactory performance.
