MAIN PURPOSE OF POSITION
To conduct basic, applied, and strategic research on key pathogens/insect pests of great importance to legumes and support breeding programs by screening and identifying donors and resistant breeding elite lines.

MAIN RESPONSIBILITIES
1. Plan and execute basic, strategic, and applied research on various aspects of plant protection in consultation with Research Supervisor
2. Establish screening protocols to screen germplasm and breeding materials against major diseases, insect pests, and other biotic stresses
3. Identify, verify, and implement modern tools and technologies in plat protection research
4. Develop integrated management strategies for diseases, especially root and foliar diseases, and insect pests including genetic resistance, agronomic approaches, biocontrol, and chemical management for profitable crop production.
5. Conduct training activities in cooperation with other programs in ICARDA for NARS partners, and advance research institutions.
6. Publish in ISI journals with focus on integrated disease management systems.
7. Develop research proposals for resource generation
8. Represent ICARDA in regional and international fora.
9. Any other duties assigned by the supervisor.
REQUIREMENTS FOR THIS JOB
EDUCATION, QUALIFICATIONS, AND EXPERIENCE
1. PhD in plant pathology, entomology or related fields from reputed agricultural university.
2. At least 5 years’ work experience on plant pathology/entomology and related research in National or International agricultural centres
3. Demonstrated experience in integrated disease and insect pest management research
4. Capacity to plan, design and implement field scale research and on-farm demonstration
5. Computer skills with an understanding of data management, experimental design and statistical analysis of research data
6. Excellent communication skills in spoken and written English and Hindi
7. Ability to work in a multidisciplinary and multicultural work environment

Terms of appointment, salary, and benefits
This is a nationally recruited position (SMP1) available for Indian nationals for which ICARDA offers an attractive compensation package including a competitive salary, medical insurance, 30 days of annual leave, five months’ maternity leave, 15 days’ paternity leave. The successful candidate will be offered an initial contract of 3 years. The contract will be renewable subject to continued need for the position, the availability of funds and satisfactory performance.
