The African Population and Health Research Center (APHRC) is a leading Africa-based, African-led, international research institution headquartered in Nairobi, Kenya, with a regional office in Dakar, Senegal. Our researchers are contributing to the body of evidence about the critical issues in population health and wellbeing impeding Africa’s development in order to provide strong direction and recommendations to policy- and decision-makers at all levels. Our priority research areas are Human Development, Health and Well-Being, Data Science and Evaluation, and Population Dynamics and Urbanization in Africa. In addition to the research component, APHRC has other programmatic areas in Research and Related Capacity Strengthening, Policy Engagement and Communications and International programs.

PURPOSE OF ROLE
1. The APHRC invites applications for a Research Officer in a project that seeks to develop and evaluate a ‘digital vaccine card’ and registry that will facilitate the electronic collection of individual data at health facilities to allow improved monitoring of vaccine coverage and timeliness by both healthcare providers and parents/caregivers, in turn improving vaccine equity.
2. This is a short-term assignment expected to take place between June and December 2023 in Uganda.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
1. Lead the process of obtaining ethics approval for the research project in Uganda.
2. Contribute to the development of study tools, training manuals and field guides to be used for data collection.
3. Coordinate the recruitment, training and supervision of the field team in Uganda.
4. Coordinate field work in Uganda and be responsible for data quality.
5. Mobilize and educate the community in relation to the research project.
6. Coordinate translation of project documents from English to local languages.
7. Conduct literature review and participate in writing scientific papers.
8. Prepare regular field and project reports.
9. Coordinate policy engagement and dissemination of project research findings to appropriate audiences in Uganda.
10. Contribute to preparation of policy briefs and fact sheets from the projects’ findings.
11. Any other related assignment(s), assigned by the supervisor, project manager and the principal investigator (PI).
REQUIREMENTS FOR THIS JOB
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
1. Master’s degree in any of the following areas: Public health, Epidemiology, Population Studies/Demography, Social Sciences, Statistics, Health Sciences or related discipline.
2. At least five years’ experience in research post Master’s degree qualification.
3. Proven quantitative and qualitative research skills.
4. Experience conducting field research and managing data collection teams.
5. Experience in engaging policy makers and key stakeholders with research evidence.
6. Ability to work independently, set priorities, juggle tasks and meet tight deadlines.
7. Excellent interpersonal and organizational skills and ability to work in a culturally diverse team.
8. Be a resident of Uganda.
