ABOUT The African Population and Health Research Center (APHRC) is a premier research-to-policy institution, generating evidence, strengthening research and related capacity in the African research and development ecosystem, and engaging policy to inform action on health and development. APHRC seeks to drive change by developing strong African research leadership and promoting evidence-informed decision-making (EIDM) across sub-Saharan Africa. The APHRC in collaboration with the University of Witwatersrand and the University of Edinburgh, has received funding from the UK National Institute of Health (NIHR) Programme for a project Addressing Commercial Determinants of Health in sub-Saharan Africa (ACORDS). The project aims to explore how three unhealthy commodity industries (UCIs), alcohol, ultra-processed food, and fossil fuels influence population health in SSA, and to inform the development of coherent policies to promote health and sustainable development. The project brings together a multi-disciplinary team of leading researchers across diverse disciplines including Policy Research, Public Health, Epidemiology, Health Economics.
JOB SUMMARY 1. This is a full-time position based in Nairobi, Kenya with regular travels to the University of Witwatersrand, Johannesburg, where the candidate will be enrolled. 2. This opportunity is a post-graduate post with registration at the Wits Center for Health Economics, Decision Science and based at APHRC under the Chronic Diseases Management Unit, where the project will be implemented. 3. Outstanding support will be provided throughout the project, and the successful applicant will become an integral part of the young and dynamic APHRC team, as well as spend time with internationally respected researchers, and travel to field sites. 4. The PhD Fellowship is for thirty-six (36) months starting from January 2025.
DUTIES/ RESPONSIBILITIES: 1. Work alongside a multidisciplinary team at APHRC to provide support in desk reviews, qualitative and quantitative field data collection and analyses; 2. Collaborate and work with the project team to identify and establish stakeholder engagement; 3. Supports project dissemination activities such as manuscript and report writing; 4. Identify and propose appropriate venues to convene in-country stakeholder engagement forums; 5. Document in-country processes and sessions with stakeholders; and 6. Attend project-related meetings as required.

REQUIREMENTS FOR THIS JOB |
QUALIFICATIONS, SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE: 1. A master’s degree in public health, economics, medical, social and biological sciences or other relevant fields. 2. Experience in qualitative research including the use of software such as Atlas ti, NVivo or opencode. 3. Demonstrable experience, ability, and practical skills in statistics and knowledge in statistical software including R, STATA Excel and other tabulations software. 4. Demonstrable ability to organize and prioritize work efficiently while delivering results to the required standard and to an agreed schedule. 5. Ability to draft manuscripts for publication and present results at conferences. 6. Applicant must be a full-time staff who has spent at least three years working at the Center.
Desirable Competencies: 1. Knowledge of commercial determinants of health 2. Experience in conducting desk reviews and evaluation 3. Prior experience in publication 4. Demonstrable desire to continue to work within sub-Saharan Africa after completion of the project. 5. Fluent in the English language. 6. Excellent communication skills. 7. Excellent teamwork skills. 8. Applicant should be a citizen of any of African countries.
