JOB DESCRIPTION The Ethiopian Government has invested substantially in improvements of the health system. Biomedical technology is now increasingly applied and shall be part of the training for health care professionals. However, trainings are not yet practically oriented and much of the equipment in hospitals is not functioning. The Nekemte Regional Referral Hospital has established a workshop where biomedical equipment shall be repaired and health care staff and biomedical students shall be practically trained. By supporting this workshop, biomedical technicians and nurses will gain competence and practical experience. Furthermore, biomedical equipment from surrounding health posts can be repaired and maintained.
The Nekemte Regional Referral Hospital has established a new workshop within its compound and has placed two biomedical engineers there. You will support and work alongside these engineers in collaboration with the hospital staff and the Senior Management Team. Furthermore, you will foster the collaboration with surrounding health institutions and a vocational training centre in Nekemte, as well as a training centre in Addis Abeba.
The international Biomedical Equipment Technician/Engineer (m/f/d) reports to the Hospital Director of Nekemte Referral Hospital and the GIZ Project Manager. She/he will be based in the project office in Addis Abeba with frequent travels to Nekemte (approx. 70%).
YOUR TASKS 1. Establishing and supporting the regional hospital and workshop in Nekemte technically and in its managerial procedures 2. Training and supervising hospital staff in maintenance and repairs of the full range of biomedical equipment present in the hospital (unless requiring company maintenance), of all levels of technology; also support staff of associated hospitals/health centers in the surrounding area; arrange for external trainers if needed in specialized fields 3. Advising the hospital’s management team on a comprehensive management of their biomedical equipment, roles and responsibilities, and respective needs 4. Liaising with Tegbare-id TVET college in their function as Centre of Excellence and training hub to establish support structures 5. In cooperation with Tegbare-id TVET College in Addis Abeba and Nekemte Polytechnic College: supporting the practical vocational training of students (biomedical technicians) 6. Supporting hospital staff in reaching out to associated hospitals and health centers to develop the workshop further into a supra-regional maintenance and repair hub 7. Training and mentoring of the staff of Nekemte Referral Hospital and Nekemte Health Science College in the appropriate handling and use of medical equipment; 8. Jointly with the hospital management team and in close cooperation with the International Expert placed in Addis Abeba at Tegbare-id: setting up an (electronic) inventory system for biomedical equipment, an internal hospital preventive maintenance system and ongoing training system to continuously introduce staff to operation and maintenance of medical equipment 9. Exchanging with the Oromia Regional Health Bureau in Addis Abeba and advising on the appropriate use of technology and needs for budget, spare parts and external maintenance 10. Supporting the project team with documenting experiences and lessons learned and sharing them with hospital management team and Oromia Regional Directorate for Health 11. Contribution to M&E and knowledge management of the partner organization and the project

REQUIREMENTS FOR THIS JOB |
YOUR PROFILE 1. Biomedical technician (m/f/d) with trainer’s license or biomedical engineer (m/f/d) with practical and teaching/training experience 2. Multi-annual practical working experience in maintenance and repair of (basic) medical equipment 3. Strong propensity for teaching 4. Enjoying working with a young and motivated hospital management team in a local environment 5. Good written and spoken English 6. Knowledge of the local language (Oromo) would be an asset, but a minimum is willingness to learn it 7. Good communication skills, intercultural competence and a genuine interest in development cooperation 8. Overseas working experience, in particular in a low/middle income country is an asset, especially working experience in Ethiopia
LOCATION INFORMATION Addis Abeba is situated in the highlands of Ethiopia with a mild and pleasant climate. There is a small rainy season in March and a longer one June until September. Addis has approx. 4-5 Million population and offers restaurants, shops, markets and cinemas. There is a German Embassy School (day care until grade 12) and various international schools including US and French. The health services are relatively good but not to a European standard. There is no malaria in the highlands. Addis Abeba is a family duty station.
