The African Population and Health Research Center (APHRC) is an international non-profit, non-governmental research organization committed to conducting high quality and policy relevant research on population, health, education and development issues facing sub-Saharan Africa.

The Research Capacity Strengthening Division seeks to recruit a research officer to support the monitoring, learning research and evaluation of its fellowship and training programs as well as support the research on higher education and capacity building initiatives in Africa.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
1. Support implementation of the project monitoring, evaluation, research and learning (MERL) strategy and plan and recommend any possible changes based on lessons learned;
2. Ensure that established guidelines on project monitoring and evaluation for different RCS project components are respected and aligned with;
3. Participate in the development and review of MERL tools;
4. Lead translation of MERL tools and development of data collection and training manuals;
5. Coordinate day to day data collection activities in the execution of research projects;
6. Conduct spot checks and ensure all data quality procedures are implemented in the field;
7. Support development of research proposals;
8. Conduct literature reviews;
9. Contribute to data processing;
10. Participate in scientific paper writing;
11. Write project reports;
12. Assist with the dissemination of research findings and policy dialogue with appropriate audiences;
13. Contribute to institutional publications (i.e. lay dissemination materials such as– policy/research briefs and fact sheets) in relation to the projects one is working on;
14. Represent the Center in national forums including relevant technical working groups and expert committees.
REQUIREMENTS FOR THIS JOB
QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE:
1. MS/MA/MPH or PhD in relevant field with 3-5 years’ relevant experience in Monitoring and Evaluation within health and development projects;
2. Strong experience with research, data collection and management, analysis and report writing;
3. Experience and capacity in institutional M&E systems and standards;
4. Experience in setting up data bases and dashboards;
5. Experience in training and M&E capacity building using adult learning methods;
6. Experience in data analysis and presenting statistical reports;
7. Excellent communication skills both oral and written, and demonstrated expertise in report writing, preparation of communication materials and oral presentation;
8. Experience in scientific writing including development and successful submission of abstracts, their presentation and knowledge management;
9. Ability to work under pressure to meet strict deadlines;
10. Considerable experience and capacity to collaborate with partners at multiple levels and effective networking skills;
11. Experience in working with international organizations. A team player and excellent planning and organizational skills;
12. Proficiency in French will be an advantage.
