MAIN JOB DESCRIPTION |
The African Population and Health Research Center (APHRC) is an international non-profit, non- governmental organization that carries out high quality, policy relevant research on population, health and education issues facing sub-Saharan Africa. The Center which is headquartered in Nairobi, Kenya, seeks to fill the position of Accountant for its West Africa office in Dakar, Senegal.
RESPONSIBILITIES 1. Provide support to project staff by ensuring cost effective utilization of resources; 2. Monitor project expenditure to ensure they are in line with budgets and donors’ requirements; 3. Preparation of organizational and donor financial reports; 4. Review of field imprest/staff travel advance to ensure adherence to organizational policies and specific grant requirements; 5. Prepare budgets and assist with administrative section of proposals to funders; 6. Prepare for project audits by continuously reviewing accounts for accuracy and provide support to auditors during project financial audits; 7. Process payments and funds transfers; 8. Maintain account books and perform bank reconciliations and financial projections; 9. Ensure proper records management and compliance with internal and external requirements; 10. Prepare payroll, submission of statutory deductions and other returns required by the Senegalese Government; 11. Handle all administrative work for the office including procurement and organization of workshops and meetings; 12. Ensure receipting and prompt banking of funds received; and 13. Liaise with the Head Office on financial and administrative matters.

REQUIREMENTS FOR THIS JOB |
QUALIFICATIONS AND SKILLS 1. Bachelor Degree in Accounting, Finance, Management or Business; 2. Demonstrated ability to work with a minimum of direction and supervision; 3. Strong management and planning skills of project tasks and budgets; 4. At least 3 years’ professional accounting experience preferably in an international NGO; 5. Excellent computer skills in computer software programs, including Ms word, Ms Excel and familiarity with accounting software, preferably MS Dynamics; 6. Ability to meet strict deadlines; and 7. Ability to communicate in English.
