JOB DESCRIPTION The Global Programme Green Innovation Centres for the Agriculture and Food Sector is part of the One World – No Hunger Initiative launched by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ). The aim is to introduce innovations in the agriculture and food sector to increase the incomes of smallholders, create employment opportunities and improve regional food supplies. This is intended to raise the productivity of small family farms that grow staple foods and to reduce inefficiencies. The Global Programme works in 14 countries. In Nigeria it focuses on three fields of activity: local innovation systems, skills development and sustainable agricultural business. The programme works together with partners from the state, the private sector and civil society to implement tried-and-tested, economically viable innovations in the rice, maize, cassava and potato value chains. The global project "Promoting agricultural financing for agrarian-based rural enterprises" aims to develop and implement needs-based financial services for agricultural and agribusiness enterprises in rural areas. The implementing partners are the rural and branch organizations as well as public and private service providers in the agricultural and financial sector.
YOUR TASKS 1. Coordinating project activities in consultation with other development cooperation (DC) projects 2. Advising the Nigerian Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development (FMARD), the respective umbrella organisations and sector associations, and relevant private, public and non-governmental stakeholders 3. Ensuring implementation of the consulting component and the contractually agreed inputs by the consulting firm 4. Providing technical and disciplinary guidance for the project staff, and coordinating the deployment of external short-term experts and contractual partners 5. Conducting strategic and expert dialogue with the Nigerian Federal Ministry of Agriculture, banks, companies and farmers’ associations 6. Ensuring ongoing concept development and implementation 7. Gender-sensitive results monitoring, surveys and knowledge management 8. Harmonised reporting, budget planning and budget management

REQUIREMENTS FOR THIS JOB |
YOUR PROFILE 1. University degree in agricultural science, agricultural economics or a related subject 2. Many years of experience in international cooperation (IC) 3. Extensive knowledge of rural and agricultural development, supporting agricultural value chains, innovation-oriented agricultural extension services and promoting small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) 4. Several years of experience in finance system development 5. Initial experience with innovative solutions in agricultural financing 6. Experience in managing and implementing complex rural development projects in IC or DC 7. Experience in sector policy advice and in steering multi-stakeholder processes 8. Business fluency in German and English
LOCATION INFORMATION 1. Place of residence: Abuja, Nigeria 2. Climate: The climate in Abuja is generally pleasant (https://www.liportal.de/nigeria/). The rainy season is warm and humid, lasting from around April to October, with the heaviest rainfall in July and August. In those months peak daytime temperatures are just under 30° C. During the dry season there is hardly any rain and in the months of February and March daytime temperatures rise to 30° C to 35° C. Night-time temperatures remain above 20° C all year round. 3. Health care: basic medical care is available in Abuja and elsewhere and the doctors and hospitals are of an international standard. 4. Shopping and supplies: several international supermarket chains have branches in Abuja. They sell almost everything needed for day-to-day living, including many European and international products. 5. Travel connections: several European airlines offer daily direct flights to Europe. 6. Schools and school fees: Abuja has a German kindergarten, a German primary school, and international preschools, primary and secondary schools (French school, American school and various schools following a British curriculum). 7. Miscellaneous: Abuja also offers a wide range of sporting options (football, beach volleyball, basketball, tennis, squash, swimming, cycling (especially mountain biking), boxing, fitness, yoga and hiking) and many sports activities for children. The city has a budding arts and culture scene. There is a small selection of local and international restaurants and cafés. 8. Security: the security situation requires extreme vigilance. Special safety precautions apply to GIZ seconded staff. These and all other GIZ security measures must be observed at all times.
