MAIN JOB DESCRIPTION
The African Population and Health Research Center (APHRC) is an international non-profit, non-governmental organization that carries out high quality, policy-relevant research on population, health and education issues facing sub-Saharan Africa. Our goal is to generate evidence for meaningful action to improve the lives of all Africans. The Center seeks to recruit two Research Officers with expertise in Early Childhood Development (ECD) to work in the Maternal and Child Wellbeing Unit within her Research Division.
MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES:
1. Provide support in the management of early childhood development (ECD) integrated projects including training of field workers, supervision of field work and data management;
2. Develop study tools, training manuals and field guides to use for data collection;
3. Lead the process of obtaining ethical approval for research projects;
4. Participate in workshops, meetings, conferences and other project relevant activities, and report on the proceedings;
5. Contribute to proposal development to strengthen scientific knowledge in ECD or related fields;
6. Contribute to various dissemination outputs such as inception meetings, policy engagement, scientific paper writing, policy briefs, factsheets and reports.
7. Take lead in preparing progress and end-of-grant reports to donors; and,
8. Perform other duties as may be assigned by the supervisor.
REQUIREMENTS FOR THIS JOB
QUALIFICATIONS, experience and skills:
1. Masters in ECD or closely-related fields;
2. Good writing skills on relevant subject areas;
3. Experience in working with young children, with a strong interest in ECD;
4. Proven experience in conducting household surveys and/or health facility-based surveys;
5. Strong quantitative skills (managing, analyzing and interpreting data), with extensive familiarity with statistical packages (STATA, SAS or SPSS);
6. Computer literacy in Microsoft packages (MS Word, MS PowerPoint, MS Excel); and,
7. Excellent interpersonal and organizational skills and ability to work in a culturally diverse team.
DESIRABLE:
1. Nutrition qualifications and expertise, specifically in maternal, infant and young child nutrition;
2. At least two years’ post-Masters qualification experience in a research setting;
3. Experience and familiarity with a diverse health and social science datasets;
4. Expertise in qualitative methods, specifically, familiarity with common qualitative analysis software packages (e.g. NVivo);
5. Experience in developing proposals and attracting research grants; and,
6. Publication record in peer-reviewed journals focusing on ECD or related fields.
