JOB DESCRIPTION The Forest-Environment Programme (PFE) is a bilateral project implemented by GIZ, supporting the sustainable management of forest resources in Cameroon. Through its component “management of forest resources in the municipalities” it aims to improve the capacities of councils to plan, implement and coordinate activities related to sustainable forestry. One of the component’s objectives is to strengthen the capacities of the councils and its forestry units to design, implement and monitor council forest management plans and to increase council revenues from sustainable exploitation of council forests. YOUR TASKS 1. Advising the councils and its forestry units on preparing management plans including all preliminary studies (i.e. environmental and social impact study) and attending to the implementation of these management plans in accordance with national laws and regulations 2. Supporting council forest units to improve the quality of council forests management, to ensure compliance with management plans, to implement all stipulated activities such as a logging operation monitoring, management of nurseries or plantation and restauration of forests 3. Contributing to the acceptance of the sustainable forest exploitation by the councils and the local communities 4. Strengthening the councils’ monitoring capacities to ensure sustainable forest exploitation by the sub-contractors 5. Supporting the councils in identifying, planning and implementing activities and projects to increase the local valorisation of timber (i.e.: a locally managed mobile saw unit in the municipality of Dzeng) 6. Supporting the council in coordination with other stakeholders such as sub-contractors, local and national authorities, international actors and/or initiatives, private partners etc.

REQUIREMENTS FOR THIS JOB |
YOUR PROFILE 1. Master’s degree in forest management/natural resource management or similar training/experience in tropical forestry 2. Several years relevant work experience 3. Good knowledge of IT and basic geomatic tools 4. First experience in preparation of management plans, forest inventory and/or in silviculture projects in tropical countries 5. Experience in the legal and sustainable forest exploitation, logging operations and/or forestry would be an advantage 6. Curiosity of living abroad and working in a different cultural context 7. Team spirit and sensitivity to a multi-player collaboration, high adaptability to difficult contexts 8. Good knowledge of French
LOCATION INFORMATION 1. Proposed place of residence: Bertoua, East Kamerun. The location is not suitable for children. Yaoundé (capital, quartier Bastos) might be considered instead 2. Climate: Warm climate with rainy season from April – October; average temperature between 23,7°C and approximately 1600 mm annual rainfall 3. Healthcare: There exist basic medical services provided by local specialist doctors and private health clinics 4. Supply and shopping facilities: Basic items for the daily needs are locally available, European goods/products are available 5. Accessibility: City roads and overland routes are in a reasonable condition; no Flights; Yaoundé airport at 255 km distance; transport in the town is mainly by moto-taxi and restricted to 6 am to 0:00 am 6. The security situation requires increased alertness. There are special security risk mitigation measures applying to GIZ staff on-site. All staff must follow GIZ security instructions at any time.
