JOB ADVERT SUMMARY The Land and Agricultural Development Bank of South Africa (Land Bank) is South Africa’s only specialist agricultural bank established in 1912, the bank’s sole objective is to serve South African commercial and emerging farmers and bring specially designed financial services within their reach. These services enable farmers to finance land, equipment, improve assets and obtain production credit. As change has swept across the sector in South Africa the socio-economic makeup of agriculture has altered, bringing new entrants from historically disadvantaged backgrounds on to the land, these new farmers, facing the challenges of establishing sustainable agri-businesses across the agricultural value chain, Land Bank has been a commercial lifeline offering appropriately designed financial products that facilitate personal and commercial viability in a sector that is vital to the sustainability of South Africa and its people.
MAIN PURPOSE OF THE JOB To conduct applied business research analysis segmented by external analysis themes in support of both the Land Bank and the Land Bank Insurance Company (LBIC) from a macro- economic perspective. Conducts full spectrum of analysis required to examine the research themes (global, domestic and regional trends) across various agriculture related themes.
The role specifically focusses on research and analysis on behalf of Land Bank as it relates to economics.
KEY PERFORMANCE AREAS Development and coordination of Land Bank Economics Policies and Frameworks 1. Develops the Land Bank Economic Frameworks and modelling tools aligned to Land Bank strategy and Investments. 2. Identifies all economic impact variables, and analyses those for internalisation into the business 3. Develops the Land Bank research agenda on specialist / cross sectoral areas that impact agriculture (in amongst others, Infrastructure, Energy, domestic Land pricing, Banking, Insurance, Import/export Markets, Water, Manufacturing) 4. Leads the implementation of the research agenda, the outcomes, and the socialisation of those outcomes 5. Creates alliances with external parties in Specialist / Cross sectors 6. Makes specific proposals on the priority sectors for future investment 7. Identifies most beneficial collaboration efforts which will drive Land Bank strategy and agenda and initiates discussions on Bank behalf 8. Advises on and monitors relevance of the Specialist / Cross Sector framework based on research conducted 9. Ensure regular model based measurement of development impact for reporting to NT, Board, etc.
Coordinates and Facilitates Macro-Economic Research 1. Prioritises key thematic agenda for research (Development Indicators) within Macro Economics and Specialist / Cross Sectors 2. Initiates research proactively based on trends or via requests specific to business relevant requirements 3. Defines research methodology in line with legislation, policies and procedures and determines relevant data that would be most applicable 4. Produces research papers from the data presented in accordance with standards and format containing all the relevant information satisfying the objectives and the outcomes of the research. 5. Proactively assesses & analyses economic environment externally and further determines the requirements e.g. legislative changes, discipline policies, global policies. 6. Analyses and assesses the data and initiates corrective action where data is incorrect/ insufficient. Interprets data obtained to make it relevant for the Bank’s lending criteria/ Bank environment. 7. Conduct any ad hoc, non-scheduled research as and when required

Provide economics and specialist sector insights for formulation of the Bank’s growth strategy 1. Identifies opportunities for the Bank to innovate through research or policy and recommends changes based on these findings. 2. Based on research defines proposed solutions and approaches in relation to the economic and cross sectors that would be business relevant and applicable to business requirements. 3. Compiles relevant reports to support business relevant research. 4. Integrates research and policy solutions to influence the risk assessment and credit process of the Bank. 5. Drives ultimate socialisation into quality business recommendations.
Leads Thought Leadership for the Bank in respect of Economics and Cross Sectors 1. Identifies opportunities for facilitating stakeholder engagement. 2. Identifies opportunities for the Bank to innovate through research or policy and recommends changes based on these findings. 3. Engages with both policy makers and academic researchers to influence policy externally through profiling Bank solutions. 4. Externally engages on behalf of the Bank on key policy matters. 5. Seeks solutions through interactions that provide guidance for the Bank. 6. Investigates and comments on areas impacted upon by the Banks role. 7. Integrates research and policy solutions to influence the risk assessment and credit process of the Bank 8. Drives ultimate socialisation into quality business recommendations
