JOB DESCRIPTION
The "Green innovation centre in the agricultural and food sector" in Zambia aims to contribute to sustainable rural development through innovations along the soya and peanut value chains in the Eastern Province and milk in the Southern Province. GIZ provides support to the dairy value chain in Zambia’s Southern Province focusing on small-scale dairy farmers and their cooperatives. Key thematic areas are: animal husbandry and dairy management, feeding regimes and fodder production; breeding of dairy cows; access to financial services and access to markets; adaption to climate change & business orientation of cooperatives. The produced milk is mainly sold to the formal market but a small amount is also processed locally into yogurt and ice cream. Through a newly added thematic focus on animal health, increased importance will be given to issues related to dairy animal health and production management.

YOUR TASKS
1. Overseeing all project activities related to the dairy value chain in Southern Province in close coordination with the project coordinator in Lusaka
2. Technical and content-related coordination of the GIZ staff working in the dairy component as well as coordination of external short-term experts and contractual partners
3. Ensuring ongoing concept development and implementation of the activities
4. Providing advisory services related to dairy farming
5. Administrative and financial steering of the dairy value chain
6. Network creation and information exchange with relevant stakeholders and ensuring cross-project collaboration with other giz projects in the cluster
7. General representation of GIZ to relevant partners in the Southern Province
8. Promotion of cross-country exchange of key actors of the value chain as well as active contribution to the global project’s working group on innovations in the dairy sector

REQUIREMENTS FOR THIS JOB

YOUR PROFILE
1. Masters degree in agricultural sciences or related field
2. Extensive knowledge in livestock farming (ideally dairy) and in aspects of rural development
3. Proven experience in project management including budget monitoring
4. Experience in staff management in respect to technical aspects
5. Excellent analytical and conceptional skills
6. Several years of working experience in international development projects, ideally in Africa
7. Excellent team player, very good communication skills and intercultural and political sensitivity
8. Mastery language skills in English (C2) and also in German (C2) is an advantage

Choma is the Provincial Capital of Southern Province, approximately a five hour drive away from the capital Lusaka, and two and a half hours drive away from Livingstone, home of the mighty Victoria Falls. It is possible to visit several exciting national parks nearby and in neighbouring countries like Botswana, Namibia and Zimbabwe. Zambia has a pleasant tropical climate with three seasons – cool and dry from May to August, hot and dry from September to November, and warm and wet from December to April. Choma has basic health care services, extended health care is available in the capital Lusaka. The location is suitable for families with small children, but international schools are only available in Lusaka.
