FIELD OF ACTIVITY The project “Competitive and climate-resilient agriculture and food industry in Namibia” supports the Ministry of Agriculture, Water and Land Reform in its efforts to make the agricultural sector in Namibia climate-adaptive, market-oriented and food-safe. Following this holistic approach, (1) the framework conditions for smallholder seed production are to be improved and (2) the competencies of smallholder farmers in climate-adapted agriculture (conservation agriculture, water management, diversification) are to be expanded. In addition, (3) local, agriculture-based (young) companies are strengthened in their farm management and marketing capacities and (4) advanced training measures on nutrition issues are implemented.
YOUR TASKS 1. Independent planning and implementation of field work, in particular training measures for target groups and advanced training for employees of the partner ministry in the field of vegetable, herb and fruit cultivation as well as integrated pest control 2. Creation of irrigation plans for small businesses, including design, technical specifications and documentation for the procurement of goods and services 3. Participatory development of smallholder agricultural production systems with target groups such as greenhouses, hydro and aquaculture systems as well as fruit and vegetable gardens 4. Technical advice to the political partner (Ministry of Agriculture, Water and Land Reform) in Rundu (Kavango East) and Nkurenkuru (Kavango West) 5. Implementation of technical cooperation with educational institutions 6. Active support in the valorisation of synergies with other projects and measures of the partner ministry 7. Support of project management in technical issues, ensuring the ability to speak and reporting on current developments in the agricultural sector and in the respective intervention areas

REQUIREMENTS FOR THIS JOB |
YOUR PROFILE 1. Diploma - a master’s degree in agricultural or horticultural sciences, agricultural technology or engineering, agricultural business administration, development economics or a comparable qualification 2. Many years of professional experience in international cooperation, including several years abroad (preferably in southern Africa) with a relevant focus on the aforementioned agricultural topics 3. Well-founded professional expertise in agricultural development and consulting with a focus on smallholder production, including business models (contract cultivation) and farm management, adaptation of agricultural production systems to climate change, irrigation, promotion of producer groups and agricultural value chains 4. Excellent didactic skills and many years of experience in adult education and practical training at, for example, agricultural vocational training centers 5. Strong communication and cooperation skills in an intercultural context 6. Expertise in advising partner institutions as well as in working with target groups 7. Very good written and spoken German and English

Additional information: The position is located in Rundu, approx. 720 km north of Windhoek on the Kavango River and on the border with Angola. Rundu is the second largest city in Namibia with officially approx. 81,000 inhabitants and the administrative seat of the Kavango East region. There are plenty of shopping opportunities, in addition to branches of several supermarket chains, there are also shops for furniture, electronics and clothing and other everyday items. Health care is provided by a state and a private hospital and several resident doctors. There are several private kindergartens, but Rundu is not a location for families with school-age children. The leisure offer is quite limited, the location is very suitable for nature and travel lovers. Flight connection from Windhoek three times a week, bus connection to Windhoek and Katima Mulilo daily, with minibuses also to other regions.
HINTS Willingness to frequent business trips lasting several days to remote project areas is required.
