LOCATION INFORMATION
Climate: The Gambia has a subtropical climate with two variations of different dry and rainy seasons. The monsoon rains start around mid-June and last until mid-October; the dry season generally begins in October each year and ends around the middle of June.

Health care: Health care is good for minor accidents and illnesses but for more serious illnesses patients should go to Europe as quickly as possible to be treated by a doctor there. The best place for medical treatment is the British Medical Research Council. Although pharmacies are widely available, the quality of the medicines on offer varies greatly.

Shops and services: There are several chains of well-stocked food stores in the Gambia which sell a large number of European and Middle Eastern products as well as a small selection of well-known American food brands. You can buy meat and vegetables at markets in the greater Banjul area.

Accessibility: Getting around towns is easy on a bicycle but you must beware of the urban traffic. There are local taxis that are generally shared and are yellow with a green stripe: there are also taxis for tourists, which are more expensive. These are green and have a white diamond painted on them. It is advisable to negotiate the price before getting into the vehicle.

Children, young children: For children who like sport, there is a leisure club in Fajara called the Fajara Club. It has a bar, a restaurant for meals at the pool, a swimming pool, a golf course, a squash court, two tennis courts, a badminton court and facilities for table tennis.

Schools and school fees: There are six international schools in the Gambia, covering all levels from pre-school to upper secondary school. However, teaching is in English or French.

Miscellaneous points: Before you move to the Gambia you should familiarise yourself with the cultural practices there. To name just two examples, you should never hold your food in your left hand or smell your food before you eat it. Also, you should find out exactly which vaccinations are required before entering the country. For instance, vaccinations for yellow fever, hepatitis A & B, and tetanus toxoid.

The security situation is tense. Special security precautions are in place for GIZ staff working in the country. GIZ’s security guidelines must be followed at all times.
