The African Population and Health Research Center (APHRC) is an international non-profit, non-governmental organization committed to conducting high quality and policy relevant research on population, health, education and development issues facing sub-Saharan Africa. Our goal is to generate evidence for meaningful action, engage with policy makers in the region to disseminate our research findings, influence policy decisions and improve the quality of life in Africa.

JOB OVERVIEW
The APHRC seeks to recruit a Data Systems Developer – IT Officer to work in the West Africa Regional Office (WARO) in Senegal.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
1. Liaise with the Head Office to access and manage the WARO Servers
2. Set-up, configure and deploy hardware and software.
3. Install and update Antivirus.
4. Assist staff to set up presentations and audiovisuals.
5. Manage and maintain the Print and Scan environment.
6. Maintain office telephony (IP system), inverters.
7. Analyse, design, develop and deploy software applications used for capturing, evaluating and sharing research data.
8. Coordinate with the head office to develop/maintain relational databases for existing and new research projects and applications.
9. Design and develop electronic data collection tools.
10. Write views to retrieve data for analysis as well as convert data to formats required by researchers.
11. Design and update programs to generate various reports from the database.
12. Train field interviewers and address programming issues encountered during training.
13. Coordinate and monitor quality control during data collection.
14. Perform basic data cleaning in the database following data collection.
REQUIREMENTS FOR THIS JOB
QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE
1. A B.Sc. degree in Computer Science, Data or Information Management related discipline.
2. 3 years of relevant experience (user support) in a busy office.
3. Experience in developing and maintaining applications using OOP principles in a .Net language (Visual Basic or Visual C#).
4. One-year experience in using ODK for surveys, PHP, MySQL and Java.
5. Experience in designing and developing large relational databases preferably using Microsoft SQL server.
6. Knowledge of data synchronization technologies.
7. Skills in manipulating data: writing complex SQL scripts to extract transform and load data in SQL server.
8. PC & Network troubleshooting skills.
9. Excellent oral and written communication in English and French.
10. Excellent interpersonal skills.
11. Detail oriented, patient and courteous.
12. Ability to work independently, set priorities, juggle tasks, meet deadlines.
13. Initiative and innovation in assessing situations and troubleshooting.

The successful candidate will have strong analytical and excellent communication skills. He/she must be self-motivated, flexible with due attention to details and a team player.
