MAIN JOB DESCRIPTION
LEVEL: Senior Associate 1
DEPARTMENT: Corporate Commercial
PRACTICE: Energy and Natural Resources Law

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include:
Technical Skills 
1. Draft and review complex contracts, regulatory framework, policies and commercial matters in oil, gas, mining, power and other energy transactions;
2. Liaise with the Senior Associate in charge of Dispute Resolution in developing the legal strategy, drafting and reviewing complex briefs on energy-related dispute resolution matters;
3. Review the drafts of Associates 1-3 to ensure conformity to the Firm's quality standards;
4. Offer advice on environmental and regulatory requirements, formulation and evaluation of various methods of project financing, laws that govern the use and conservation of energy;
5. Review documents such as production sharing contracts, joint operating agreements, bidding agreements, farm-in and farm-out agreement, financial and technical services agreements and other energy transaction documents;
6. Challenge the legal analysis of team mates to test the validity of position;
7. Conduct complex research and studies using appropriate legal tools;
8. Familiar with industry laws such as Petroleum Act, Minerals and Mining Act, Petroleum Profit Tax Act, Oil Pipeline Act, Environmental Impact Assessment Act, NNPC Act, and others;
9. Familiar with Microsoft Office applications such as Word, Outlook, Excel, PowerPoint and other Web-based applications.

Business Development:
1. Demonstrate commercial astuteness and understanding of the objectives of the Practice Area’s business development strategy.
2. Participate in the business development of the Firm’s Practice Area;
3. Develop new business opportunities from new and existing clients;
4. Demonstrate thought leadership by writing and speaking at the NBA SBL Committees, the NBA Lagos Bar, and moderating or speaking at a panel relevant to the Firm's Practice.

Financial Management:
1. Manage client billing and taking appropriate steps in accordance with internal policies and procedures for billing and collections; 
2. Supervise invoices sent out to clients to ensure that milestones for payment are met; 
3. Generate adequate practice income in line with the financial projection of the Practice Area, ensuring that the fees earned sufficiently exceed total costs and expenses incurred; 
4. Responsible for and/or liaise with the Partners for the business and financial arrangements with clients;
5. Demonstrates commercial astuteness managing resources and materials on behalf of clients and the Firm.

Leadership Skills
1. Set clear and explicit expectations when delegating work and manage underperformance appropriately and proactively;
2. Deliver presentations and knowledge sharing sessions to build the knowledge of the team;
3. Resolve issues arising from complaints and recommend technical learning needs with the team;
4. Ability to liaise with all levels of both legal and support staff to assist with the resolution of issues;  
5. Promote team work and develop strong relationships with team members; 
6. Coach, mentor and supervise junior staff;
7. Ensure that work is equitably distributed amongst the Associates to meet the needs of the Firm in relation to delivering on the clients’ work;
8. Demonstrate strong and confident ability to express oneself clearly and with assurance at all levels of seniority;
9. Able to work without significant supervision.

Client Management Skills
1. Work closely with clients to continually ensure client satisfaction
2. Advice client according to both local and international policies and procedures; 
3. Review documents prepared by Associates 1-3 to ensure that all issues address the clients' demands;
4. Encourage engagement between clients and team members to ensure that the team members understand and meet the clients' expectations;
5. Responsible for clients’ complaint and attempt to resolve them promptly;
6. Responsible for the quality of client services provided by self and team members including support staff.

Professional Standard/Development:
1. Comply with procedures set out in the Firm’s Handbook and other relevant policies;
2. Treat all information about the Firm and its client with confidentiality;
3. Keep abreast of changes in the legal industry pertaining to the Firm’s sectors;
4. Read journals and attend courses as part of continuing professional development;
5. Able to work outside normal office hours as may be required;
6. Knowledgeable across a sufficiently wide area of energy transaction;
7. Develop a strength and reputation in at least one segment of the Energy and Natural Resources Area.

REQUIREMENTS FOR THIS JOB
QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED
1. 7 – 11 years post qualification with relevant experience and expertise in the chosen Practice Area;
2. An MBA or LL.M certification;
3. Member of the Association of International Petroleum Negotiators (AIPN), Chartered Institute of Taxation, Nigeria (CITN), or any relevant professional Institution.
